Vienna, Austria
Vienna,
Austria’s capital, is located in the country’s east on the Danube River. Its creative
and intellectual legacy was formed by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and
Sigmund Freud. The city is also recognised for its Imperial palaces, counting
Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence. In the Museums Quartier region,
historic and contemporary structures display works by Egon Schiele, Gustav
Klimt and other artists.
Vienna's
grand grandeur is the legacy of the influential Habsburg monarchy. Their home
for more than six periods, the Hofburg palace complex, includes the Burgkapelle
(Imperial Chapel), where the Vienna Boys' Choir sings Sunday Mass, and the celebrated
Spanish Riding School, where Lipizzaner stallions executes elegant equine
ballet, along with a trove of galleries, including in the chandeliered Kaiser apartments
(Imperial Apartments). Other huge palaces include the baroque Scholes Belvedere
and the Habsburgs' 1441-room summer residence, Scholes Schönbrunn, while
19th-century glories such as the neo-Gothic Rathaus (City Hall) line the superb
Ringstrasse surrounding the Inner Stadt (inner city).
